Who we are
Founded in 1784 as the national provider of surgical training in Ireland, RCSI has evolved in the years since to become one of the world’s leading health sciences universities.
RCSI is unique in that we are Ireland's only specialist health sciences university and the only Surgical Royal College in the world to offer undergraduate and graduate entry programmes in Medicine, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy.
We are a not-for-profit health sciences University with a global reach and operations in Ireland, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
RCSI’s mission is to 'Educate, nurture and discover for the benefit of human health'.
At RCSI we aim to enhance human health through endeavour, innovation and collaboration. Our ultimate purpose is to work in service of patients and it is this purpose that informs everything that we do.
Our focus on health science
RCSI is one of only a few prestigious universities worldwide to focus exclusively on the health sciences.
RCSI students enjoy a unique educational experience. They learn and practice their clinical and technical skills in our state-of-the-art simulation facility and go on then to hone those skills during placements across RCSI’s extensive network of clinical sites.
A multitude of RCSI academics, researchers and healthcare professionals collaborate to ensure that our students have all the necessary skills, experience and personal attributes to become effective doctors, pharmacists and physiotherapists.
For each of the last six years, we have maintained our position among the Top 250 universities worldwide in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
In terms of societal and global impact in health, RCSI is ranked in the top 50 in the world by THE on the basis of our contribution to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 'Good Health and Well-being'.
RCSI has a student body representing over 60 different countries and more than 28,000 alumni working across 98 countries around the world.
RCSI's Undergraduate and Graduate Entry programmes are noted for their contemporary curricula and immersive teaching methods. Our faculty are award-winning academics, clinicians and researchers who have been independently recognised by prestigious institutions including the Health Research Board (HRB), the Royal Irish Academy (RIA), the and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
RCSI is also a research-intensive university. We receive competitive funding from government agencies and other sponsors in Ireland and internationally to undertake high-impact clinical, patient-centred research projects. RCSI researchers are recipients of significant European Research Council grants and, as an institution, RCSI has the highest success rate in the EU Horizon 2020 of any Irish institution (28%).
