Recognition of prior learning

RCSI has established a structured recognition of prior learning (RPL) application process for doctors who have completed verifiable surgical registrar level posts within the Irish public health service. This process enables applicants to demonstrate their competence, learning, and professional development for consideration for application to Higher Specialist Training (HST).

Introduction

RCSI supports national initiatives to formally recognise prior learning. This guidance is intended for individuals applying for RPL solely for the purpose of eligibility to apply for HST in Ireland.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

• At least five years of continuous employment as a non consultant hospital doctor (NCHD) in surgical posts in the Republic of Ireland, these posts must all be in the public health system.
• At least two consecutive years at surgical registrar level in the specialty in which they intend to pursue a career.
• Registrar level posts must be in Model 2, 3, or 4 hospitals, each lasting a minimum of six months and including full participation in emergency surgical on call services in a hospital recognised for training in the specialty an applicant is applying to.

RPL outcome: Letter of recognition

Successful applicants will receive an official letter of RPL confirming they have met the standard required to apply for HST via the non RCSI ESR route.

Key points:

• The letter is valid for two years.
• It permits application to two HST recruitment cycles (e.g., July 2027 and July 2028 commencement).
• Standard RCSI HST recruitment rules apply thereafter.
