Research Methods for Healthcare Professionals

Summary

This module aims to develop advanced cognitive knowledge and critical thinking skills in the core concepts of contemporary research methods, including study design, outcome measurement, statistical methods and research ethics. The module also aims to equip the student with the necessary skills to formulate a research question, convert that question into a research protocol, collect and analyse data.

This course is for healthcare professionals working in hospital, community or private practice settings. Professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, nurses and general practitioners may apply for this course.

The programme will be delivered with online material for participants to access in their own time. This is followed by scheduled in-person workshops in RCSI's St Stephen's Green campus.

Students who successfully complete this course and pass all assessments will receive an academic transcript and certificate detailing the academic award and credits received. This is a postgraduate programme and those who complete this course will gain 10 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) at level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (equivalent to level 7 on the European Framework of Qualifications).

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an overall understanding of the research process and an ability to formulate workable research questions.
  • Understand appropriate applications for quantitative and qualitative research design and the differences between these research design types. 
  • Critically evaluate methods of measurement at all levels of the WHO ICF and implement the use of appropriate outcome measurement.
  • Demonstrate an ability to understand and analyse data.
  • Demonstrate scientific writing skills.
