About
This one-year, part-time online Masters is offered by RCSI’s Health Professions Education Centre and builds on the RCSI PgDip in Health Professions Education. It equips health professionals with critical knowledge in education theory, ethics, research design and leadership, developing the foundation for conducting and applying meaningful scholarship and leadership in health professions education.
Through interactive teaching modules, flipped learning, peer forums and coaching, learners are supported in designing an independent education research or leadership project. This programme is ideal for those seeking to deepen their expertise, broaden their impact, and progress in a career in health professions education leadership.
Learning resources follow best practice in health professions education. This course is a Level 9 award on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications.

Course information
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Critically analyse a problem within health professions education
- Conduct a health professions education literature review
- Apply theory to design an independent health professions education proposal
- Apply ethical considerations to addressing a health professions education problem through scholarship or research
- Propose educational leadership strategies to facilitate innovation and change.
Learning on this programme is supported through a blend of synchronous interactive and self-directed activities. Students will participate in online, synchronous 90 minute teaching blocks scheduled in September, November, January and March.
In preparation for each block, students will complete flipped classroom tasks designed to enhance engagement with key concepts. Monthly peer forum tasks provide opportunities for collaborative learning and feedback. Each student will also be assigned a coach for monthly consultations tailored to their chosen project topic.
The programme concludes with a final oral presentation in May, to showcase and discuss each student’s independent work.
Modules begin: September 2025.
Learners on this programme will be engaged in both formative and summative assessment. With respect to the latter, learners will develop and submit a/an:
- Problem statement and literature review
- Independent project design
- Ethics assignment
- Educational leadership quality improvement plan.
We are proud to be a recognised University of the National University of Ireland (NUI). All RCSI programmes are accredited by the NUI.
Recognition by ministries and bodies in all jurisdictions must be determined by the individual applicants.
Admissions
To apply for the MSc in Health Professions Education, you must:
- Hold the RCSI PgDip in Health Professions Education degree
- Be involved in a teaching capacity in your current role; and,
- Not be enrolled on another postgraduate programme at RCSI or a different higher education institution.
If you have completed the RCSI PgDip in Health Professions Education, fees for Year 2 of the MSc programme are €6,900.

- Fee includes all resources, access to our award-winning online learning portal and access to extensive RCSI-only databases.
- Fee includes an NUI fee.
- Fee is payable via the above schedule, where relevant.
- If you have outstanding fees you will not be entitled to receive your grades or be eligible to progress and or graduate (VLE and Library privileges will be withdrawn in these cases).
- RCSI accepts no obligation to refund any fee, or part thereof, in respect of a student who chooses to withdraw from a programme.
- If you choose to withdraw from a programme you are liable for full fees owed for the seat on that programme.
- All NUI parchments are issued in Latin; you will be required to pay an additional fee of €50 to NUI if you wish to have a parchment published in English.
- Fees are subject to review annually.
- If you are being sponsored or funded by your employer you should upload a funding confirmation letter in the document upload section on the application portal.
