Improving the lives of people with epilepsy

  • Research

Researchers at FutureNeuro, the SFI Research Centre based at RCSI, are guided by the principle that continuity of patient care is vital to achieving an integrated medical care model, enabling people with neurological disorders to live independently.

Our ehealth researchers in FutureNeuro have developed an electronic patient portal (ePortal) component of the Irish National Epilepsy Electronic Patient Record (EPR) that is integrated with telemedicine infrastructure to promote well-being for people with epilepsy.

Our ehealth researchers in FutureNeuro have developed an electronic patient portal (ePortal) component of the Irish National Epilepsy Electronic Patient Record (EPR) that is integrated with telemedicine infrastructure to promote well-being for people with epilepsy.

The role of the epilepsy patient portal is to co-produce health and well-being in partnership with patients, families and communities – empowering people with epilepsy to coordinate their care across multiple providers and create a joined-up service that ensures continuity of care.

The portal enables users to access their healthcare records and tools to support self-management, such as adhering to their treatment plan and preventative measures to reduce seizures. People with epilepsy and their families can share this essential clinical information with key healthcare providers. Healthcare providers can then analyse the health information recorded by the patient to inform future care.

Many face-to-face clinical services for people with epilepsy were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing the risk of worsening their condition. Creating conditions for ehealth-enabled virtual care and the remote delivery of essential care will remain a focus in a post-COVID-19 healthcare setting. This project enables the radical reform of out-patient care needed to deliver proactive and personalised care to patients.

FutureNeureo continues to build on the HSE Epilepsy Lighthouse Project in collaboration with RCSI, Epilepsy Ireland and Beaumont Hospital, linking advanced research and genomics to the electronic health records of patients that clinicians use on a daily basis – putting the person at the centre of the service.

RCSI is committed to achieving a better and more sustainable future through the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
