Course details

The Postgraduate Certificate in Wound Management and Tissue Viability is a fully accredited six-month, part-time programme delivered in digital format through our online teaching platform. The course offers you the opportunity to explore and analyse existing theories and concepts that are fundamental in wound management and tissue viability.

Our experienced team have the skills and technology to provide a rich and engaging online experience and to support and guide new students, no matter their level of technical ability. Curriculum

This programme will provide you with the skills and knowledge to critically:

  • Evaluate the application of clinical judgement to professional practice by utilising evidence-based practice within wound management and tissue viability.
  • Compare and contrast management and leadership approaches to the effective management and leadership in the provision of within wound management and tissue viability services.
  • Evaluate evidence based methods of assessment and management of wounds of varying aetiologies with reference to person-centred care.
  • Discuss key considerations in the development of services for individuals with wounds of varying aetiologies within the context of a team approach to care.
  • Demonstrate competency in the delivery and evaluation of patient care within the field of wound management and tissue viability.

Critical Issues in the Assessment and Management of Individuals with Pressure Ulcers and Diabetic Foot Ulcers

The aim of this module is to support the development of advanced cognitive knowledge and critical thinking skills required for the prevention, assessment and management of pressure ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers.

Critical Issues in the Assessment and Management of Individuals with Leg Ulceration and Lymphoedema

The aim of this module is to support the development of advanced cognitive knowledge and critical thinking skills required for the prevention, assessment and management of leg ulceration and lymphoedema.

If you wish to progress your studies after completing this Postgraduate Certificate, you can choose to complete a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) and a Master of Science (MSc). The PgDip and the MSc programmes share anchor modules facilitating the development of knowledge and skills in research, leadership and reflection and clinical competencies by way of a clinical practicum.

Helen Strapp

Helen Strapp is a Nurse Tutor at the School of Nursing & Midwifery at RCSI. She is a qualified RGN/RSCN/RNP/RANP, and has a PgDip in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair and MSc in Nursing. During her nursing career she worked as a clinical nurse specialist in tissue viability and then as an advanced nurse practitioner in tissue viability.

She has over 20 years’ experience working in tissue viability and is a council member of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, a member of the European Wound Management Association and a founder member of the Wound Management Association of Ireland. She is also a member of the Tissue Viability Association of Ireland.

We are proud to be a recognised University of the National University of Ireland (NUI). All RCSI programmes are accredited by the NUI.

Recognition by Ministries and bodies in other jurisdictions must be determined by the individual applicants.
