RCSI Council
2020 - 2022 Council
The governing body of RCSI is its Council, composed of 21 surgeons who are Fellows of the College – and two lay members – all of whom are elected by the College's Fellows and Members.
Council meets regularly during the year and meetings are chaired by the President. Council delegates a number of its main functions to various boards and committees. The significant activities of these boards and committees are reported to Council on a regular basis. The following are the current members of our Council:
Prof. Patrick Ronan O'Connell (MB, BCh, BAO, MD, FRCSI, honFRCS(Edin), honFRCPS(Glas)) is President of RCSI and a Consultant General/Colorectal Surgeon at St Vincent's University Hospital.
Previously Professor O’Connell served as a Professor of Surgery at University College Dublin for 10 years; Dean and Chair of the Division of Surgery at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital; Chair of Surgery at St Vincent's University Hospital; and is a Past President of the European Society of Coloproctology.
Prof. Laura Viani (MSc, FRCSI) is a Vice President of RCSI, a Consultant Otolaryngologist/Neuro-otologist at Beaumont Hospital and Director of the National Hearing Implant and Research Centre (NHIRC) at Beaumont.
Prof. Viani is also an Honorary Associate Professor of Surgery in RCSI and an Honorary Adjunct Professor in the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin.
Mr Kenneth Mealy (MD FRCSI) is Immediate Past President of RCSI and a General Surgeon with a special interest in Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Surgery at Wexford General Hospital.
Mr Mealy has an active interest in surgical training, QI and process management in delivering surgical services. He was co-lead of the National Clinical Programme in Surgery and Medical Director of the National Office of Clinical Audit (NOCA).
He also held the position of President of the Surgical Section of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (RAMI) in 2008.
Prof. Paul Burke (BSc, MD, FRCSI) is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at University Hospital Limerick, and St John's Hospital.
Prof. Burke is also Chief Academic Officer for the UL Hospital Group.
Prof. Ronan Cahill (MB, BAO, BCh, FRCS, MD) is a General/Colorectal Surgeon at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and Professor of Surgery at University College Dublin. He also leads the UCD Centre for Precision Surgery.
Prof. Cahill He has authored over 150 peer reviewed publications, five book chapters and four national guidelines.
Prof. Camilla Carroll MD, MEd Surg Ed(I.C.L), FRCSI, FRCS(OTO), FRCS(ORLHNS), Imperial College London (2015 - 2018)) is a Consultant Otolaryngologist Head and Neck Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital Dublin.
Prof. Carroll is also the National Lead ENT Education in Primary Care, RCSI Chair for International Co-operation and a Clinical Associate Professo at TCD Medical School.
Prof. Kevin Conlon (MB, BAO, BCh, FRCSI, FACS, FRCS (Glas), FRCS (Ed), MBA, MCh, MA, Diplomate American Board of Surgery) is a Consultant General Surgeon at St Vincent's University Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital.
Prof. Conlon is also Professor of Surgery at Trinity College Dublin.
Prof. K. Simon Cross (MD, M.Med.Sci., FRCSI(Gen)., FRCS(Ed)) is a Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon at Waterford University Hospital.
Ms Bridget Egan (MB, BCh, BAO. FRCSI, MCh, FRCSI (Gen Surg), HDip QHC, FEBVS (Hon)) is a Consultant Surgeon (Vascular) in Tallaght University Hospital.
Mr James Geraghty (PhD, MCh, FRCSI) is a Consultant General Surgeon at St Vincent's University Hospital and Senior Lecturer in Surgery at UCD.
Prof. David Healy (BSc, FRCSI, LLM, PhD) is a Consultant Cardiothoracic and Transplant Surgeon at St Vincent's University Hospital and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
Prof. Thomas H. Lynch (MMs, MCh, FRCS, FRCSI, FRCS(UROL)) is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at St James’s Hospital and Blackrock Clinic.
Prof. Lynch is also a Clinical Professor in Surgery at Trinity College, Dublin
The Hon. Mr Justice Peter Kelly is President of the High Court.
Mr Justice Kelly is Chairman of the Commercial Law Centre at UCD and an Adjunct Professor of Law at Maynooth University. He is also Chairman of the Edmund Rice Schools Trust and St Francis Hospice Dublin, and a Director of the Dublin Choral Foundation.
Mr Paddy Kenny (MB, BCh, BAO, MFSEM, FRCSI, FRCS (Tr & Orth)) is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Connolly Memorial and Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospitals.
He is also Joint National Clinical Lead of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Clinical Programme and President of the Irish Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.
Prof. Michael J Kerin (MB, MCH, FRCSI, FRCS.Ed.,FRCS) is Consultant General and Breast Surgeon at Galway University Hospital.
Prof. Kerin is also the Chair of Surgery and Vice Dean of the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
Mr Eamon Mackle (MCh, FRCSI) is a Consultant General Surgeon at Craigavon Area Hospital. He is also an Honorary Lecturer at QUB.
Prof. Deborah McNamara (MB, BAO, BCh (Hons), FRCSI, MD, Intercollegiate FRCSI (Gen Surg)) is a Consultant General/Colorectal Surgeon at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.
Mr David Moore (MB, BCh, BAO, FRCSI, MCh Orth) is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Children's Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin; Tallaght University Hospital and Blackrock Clinic.
Ms Margaret O'Donnell (MB, FRCS, FRCSI (Plast)) is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, based in Blackrock Clinic and St Vincent’s Private Hospital, undertaking both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.
Mr David Quinlan (BA,MB, BCh, BAO, FRCSI, FACS, FEBU) is a Consultant Urologist at St Vincent's University Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at UCD.
Professor H. Paul Redmond (BSc, MCh, FRCSI, FRCSI(gen), FRCS(Eng), FRCP&S(Glas)Hon, FACS) is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at UCC and Cork University Hospital Group.
His special interest is in Breast, Endocrine and Melanoma Surgery, for which he has served as Lead Clinician.
Roderick Ryan is a chartered accountant and serves as a director of a number of companies, including Glen Dimplex.
Mr Ryan was formerly Managing Partner of Arthur Andersen.
Mr Keith Synnott (MB, BCh, BAO, FRCSI(Tr&Orth)) is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital with a special interest in spine surgery and arthroplasty.
Mr Synnott is also the National Clinical Lead for Trauma Services.
