RCSI Council
2024 - 2026 Council
The governing body of RCSI is its Council, which is comprised of 21 surgeons, all of whom are Fellows of RCSI and are elected biennially by the RCSI Fellows and Members. The Council also has two lay members.
Council meets regularly during the year and meetings are chaired by the President. Council delegates a number of its main functions to various boards and committees. The significant activities of these boards and committees are reported to Council on a regular basis. At a meeting of the College held on Wednesday, 5 June 2024 the following were elected to office (listed in order of year of Fellowship):
Prof. Deborah McNamara (MB, BAO, BCh (Hons), FRCSI, MD, Intercollegiate FRCSI (Gen Surg)) is President of RCSI and a Consultant General/Colorectal Surgeon at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.
Prof. Michael J. Kerin (MB, MCH, FRCSI, FRCS.Ed.,FRCS) is Vice President of RCSI and a Consultant General and Breast Surgeon at Galway University Hospital.
Prof. Kerin the Chair of Surgery and Vice Dean of the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and is also the Chair of Surgery and Director of the HSE West and Northwest Cancer Network.
Mr James Geraghty (PhD, MCh, FRCSI) is a Consultant General Surgeon at St Vincent's University Hospital and Senior Lecturer in Surgery at UCD.
Prof. Kevin Conlon (MB, BAO, BCh, FRCSI, FACS, FRCS (Glas), FRCS (Ed), MBA, MCh, MA, Diplomate American Board of Surgery) is a Consultant General Surgeon at St Vincent's University Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital.
Prof. Conlon is also Professor of Surgery at Trinity College Dublin.
Mr David Moore (MB, BCh, BAO, FRCSI, MCh Orth) is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Children's Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin; Tallaght University Hospital and Blackrock Clinic.
Prof. Laura Viani (MSc, FRCSI) is a Consultant Otolaryngologist/Neuro-otologist at Beaumont Hospital and Director of the National Hearing Implant and Research Centre (NHIRC) at Beaumont.
Prof. Viani is also an Honorary Associate Professor of Surgery in RCSI and an Honorary Adjunct Professor in the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin.
Prof. Camilla Carroll MB, LRCP/SI, BScAnat, MEdSurgEd, MD, FRCSI, FRCS(OTO,FRCS(ORL-HNS), FEBORLHNS(Hon) is a Consultant Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital Dublin.
Prof. Carroll is also the RCSI Council Chair for Sustainable Surgery (2020-2024); HSE Co-Chair Green Theatres and Anaesthetic Gases (2023); ICBSE Assessor, European Board Examinations ORL-HNS Lead for Head and Neck Surgery; and COSECSA Fellowship Examiner ORL-HNS.
Prof. Michael O’Riordain (MB, MD, MSc, FRCSI (Gen), Diploma in Management (IPA)) is Consultant General/Colorectal Surgeon/Chair of Division of Surgery, Mercy University Hospital, Cork.
Mr Sean Johnston (MB, BAO, BCh, L.R.C.P.SI,, MCh, FEBS, F.R.C.SI(Gen)) is a Consultant General Surgeon at Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore.
Mr Paddy Kenny (MB, BCh, BAO, MFSEM, FRCSI, FRCS (Tr & Orth)) is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Connolly Memorial and Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospitals.
He is also Joint National Clinical Lead of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Clinical Programme and President of the Irish Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.
Prof. Kilian Walsh (MB, Bch, BAO 1991 FRCSI 1995 MSc Urol 1998 FRCSI Urol 2001) is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at University Hospital Galway and Bon Secours Hospital Galway.
Mr John Caird (MB BCh BAO,M MED SCI, DCH, MD, FRCS(SN)) is a Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon at Beaumont Hospital and CHI Temple Street/OLCHC.
Ms Bridget Egan (MB, BCh, BAO. FRCSI, MCh, FRCSI (Gen Surg), HDip QHC, FEBVS (Hon)) is a Consultant Surgeon (Vascular) in Tallaght University Hospital.
Mr Keith Synnott (MB, BCh, BAO, FRCSI(Tr&Orth)) is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital with a special interest in spine surgery and arthroplasty.
Mr Synnott is also the National Clinical Lead for Trauma Services.
Prof. Carmel Malone (MB, BCh, FRCSI (Gen), MD) is Consultant General/Breast Surgeon/Clinical Lead, Galway University Hospital.
Prof. John Quinlan (MB, BCh, BAO (Hons.) AFRCSI MCh H. Dip (Quality in Healthcare) MFSEM (UK) FFSEM FRCS (Tr. & Orth.)) is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon based at Tallaght University Hospital.
Prof. Ronan Cahill (MB, BAO, BCh, FRCS, MD) is a General/Colorectal Surgeon at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and Professor of Surgery at University College Dublin. He also leads the UCD Centre for Precision Surgery.
Prof. Cahill He has authored over 150 peer reviewed publications, five book chapters and four national guidelines.
Prof. Paul Ridgway (MD MMedSc FEBS FRCSI) is a Consultant General Surgeon at Tallaght University Hospital and St Vincent's University Hospital.
Prof. David Healy (BSc, FRCSI, LLM, PhD) is a Consultant Cardiothoracic and Transplant Surgeon at St Vincent's University Hospital and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
Ms Ann Hanly (MB, BCh, BAO, LRCP&SI (Hons.), AFRCSI) is Consultant General/Colorectal Surgeon, St Vincent’s University Hospital, and Director of National Pelvic Floor Centre, St Vincent’s University, St Michael's and National Maternity Hospitals.
Mr Barry O'Sullivan (MB, BCh, BAO, MCh, FRCS) is Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Beaumont and Connolly Hospitals, and Clinical Director of Surgical Directorate, Beaumont Hospital.
Mr Justice Peter Kelly is a former President of the High Court.
He is a former chair of the Commercial Law Centre in UCD and an adjunct professor of law in Maynooth University.
He chairs or serves on the boards of a number of charities.
Roderick Ryan is a chartered accountant and serves as a director of a number of companies, including Glen Dimplex.
Mr Ryan was formerly Managing Partner of Arthur Andersen.
