RCSI to host nationwide telesurgery event at Freyer 2026 meeting
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland will host a nationwide telesurgery event at this year’s Sir Peter Freyer Surgical Symposium on Friday, 4 September 2026, which is open to all surgeons and surgical trainees.
Supported by the University of Galway and Cornerstone Robotics, surgeons and surgical trainees can book dedicated telesurgery slots to experience the Sentire Surgical System during the Freyer Symposium. Participants will sit at the robotic console in Galway while remotely controlling the Sentire robotic system located at the RCSI Robotic Surgery Training and Research Centre in Dublin. For many participants, this will be their first opportunity to experience telesurgery and to explore a robotic platform that is new to Ireland.
During each session, participants will receive a brief one-to-one introduction to the Sentire system, supported by the Cornerstone Robotics team, before operating the platform themselves through the telesurgery connection. The event will provide practical exposure to both a new robotic system and the possibilities of remote robotic surgery and training.
Professor Barry McGuire, Professor of Surgical Education and Academic Development at RCSI, said: “We are really excited about this event because it demonstrates how telesurgery can remove geographical barriers to robotic surgery training. Our vision at RCSI is to develop a national approach to robotic education that gives surgeons and trainees access to high-quality, structured training wherever they are based.
“This technology could open up exciting opportunities to deliver robotic training across Ireland, without trainees always having to travel to Dublin, and represents another important step in making advanced surgical education more accessible nationally.”
Stuart Skelton Moran, Vice President for Cornerstone Robotics UK said: “We are delighted to offer surgeons and trainees this rare opportunity to experience telesurgery first-hand and to showcase the Sentire Surgical System at the Freyer Symposium. We are also proud to support RCSI in the delivery of its new National Robotic Surgery Curriculum as the programme begins its national rollout this September. It is an exciting opportunity to be part of the development of robotic surgery education and training in Ireland.”
