The Professional Certificate in Musculoskeletal Casting and Splinting (Adults and Children) aims to develop competent healthcare practitioners who will apply specific knowledge and skills whilst providing holistic care to individuals requiring musculoskeletal casting or splinting in the adult and paediatric patient setting.

Learning outcomes

This programme will provide you with the skills and knowledge to:  

  • Demonstrate understanding, through questioning and scrutiny, of the necessary professional knowledge (theory, concepts and methods) pertaining to the management of individuals (adults and/or children) requiring musculoskeletal casting or splinting. 
  • Demonstrate the mastery of the practical skills and tools necessary to be competent in in the management of individuals (adults and/or children) requiring musculoskeletal casting or splinting. 
  • Develop the concepts and principles that underpin problem solving and decision-making in clinical practice, accepting accountability for the decision-making in the management of individuals (adults and/or children) requiring musculoskeletal casting or splinting. 
  • Acknowledge your own developing ability within the sphere of musculoskeletal casting and splinting and critically analyse your learning needs through the use of reflective practice to facilitate a lifelong learning approach to personal and professional development. 
  • Lead both the care of individuals (adults and/or children) requiring musculoskeletal casting or splinting and the team providing care within the context of collaborative working and within your own scope of practice. 

Modules

A blended learning approach is utilised in this programme, to promote lifelong learning and professional development for all nursing staff.

The programme is run over two semesters and consists of two modules. For the duration of the course, classes will alternate between online RCSI-based sessions and clinical face-to-face sessions.
