Course details

The one-year full-time Masters in Surgical Science and Practice (MChSSP) is delivered over three-terms across a full academic year running from mid- August to mid-June.

The programme commences with a two-week boot camp covering basic sciences.

All five integrated modules then run concurrently from Monday to Friday each week from early September. The majority of the programme is delivered face-to-face with time also allocated for online and directed study.

Significant time is allocated within the schedule for supervised repeated practice, revision and formative assessment with comprehensive feedback to facilitate enhancement of skills and attainment of all competencies.

Learning outcomes 

This programme will provide you with the skills and knowledge to:

Modules

Core Knowledge and Clinical Judgement You are provided with tuition and learning resources for both the basic sciences and clinical surgery in this module. Clinical judgment training will focus on diagnoses and clinical decision-making.
Clinical Skills You will develop the skills necessary to obtain a comprehensive patient history, conduct a thorough physical examination, perform basic clinical tests and interpret data in a spectrum of patient care settings.
Technical Skills This module teaches fundamental surgical skills and basic surgical procedures in a non-critical environment using simulation technology and a faculty of experienced surgeons.
Non-Technical Skills Decision-making, communication, teamwork and leadership, self- awareness and insight, conflict resolution and error management play a key role in surgical practice and are explored in this module.
Professional Development This module focuses on areas such as healthcare process improvement /LEAN healthcare/ 6-Sigma, healthcare economics, technology/medical device innovation etc.
Research Methodology This module aims to develop your ability to search databases and critically appraise the international literature on topics relevant to patient care generally and to your area of practice. 

Assessment

Formative assessment occur continuously over the entire programme and include participation in classroom activities, group work, technical and non-technical skills assessments and online assignments.

Summative assessment involve:

  • A 2,000-word written assignment per module.
  • Participation in a group project and presentations in each module. 
  • A 300-word submission to a weekly discussion forum, (6-8) per module.
  • Integrated technical and non-technical skills OSCEs.
  • A 3,000-word research report/paper.
