Leadership and Management in Healthcare

Summary

This module aims to provide participants with an understanding of the role of leadership and management in a healthcare setting and to equip participants with techniques and principles, to enable them to effectively lead and deliver a service of excellence in their own organisation.

This course is for healthcare professionals working in hospital, community or private practice settings. Professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, nurses and general practitioners may apply for this course. 

The programme will be delivered with online material for participants to access in their own time and prior to workshops/classes. This is followed by scheduled in-person workshops and classes in RCSI's St Stephen's Green campus.

Students who successfully complete this course and pass all assessments, will receive an academic transcript and certificate detailing the academic award and credits received. This is a postgraduate programme and those who complete this course will gain five European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) at level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (equivalent to level 7 on the European Framework of Qualifications).

We are proud to be a recognised University of the National University of Ireland (NUI). Recognition by Ministries and bodies in other jurisdictions must be determined by the individual applicants.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

  • Debate various healthcare systems and models and change processes in the context of changing healthcare needs
  • Discuss and analyse clinical leadership and management models and frameworks in a healthcare setting 
  • Critically debate organisational culture and structures in healthcare 
  • Critically discuss the role of quality improvement and its application to Irish healthcare settings 
  • Apply principles of budgeting, costing and cost-benefit analysis in the context of service planning
  • Critically debate change management theories
  • Undertake clinical audit and service evaluation to inform service improvement
