ICHAMS 2018

The International Conference for Healthcare and Medical Students (ICHAMS) conference is currently underway at RCSI and continues until Saturday, 17 February. ICHAMS is a conference for undergraduate healthcare and medical students to present their research to peers and educators in the field.

This year's ICHAMS welcome almost 250 undergraduate healthcare students from all over the world including 16 delegates who will deliver oral presentations; 100 who will bring poster presentations; and a further 130 passive participants. ICHAMS prides itself on providing young students with an opportunity to foster relationships with peers in a research-based setting.

In addition to the high calibre of delegates, there are four keynote speakers: Professor William Gallagher, Director of the UCD Conway Institute; RCSI Council Member Professor Laura Viani, Director of The National Cochlear Implant Programme and Hearing Research Centre Ireland; Dr Paddy Barrett, Consultant Cardiologist at The Blackrock Clinic; and Dr Mark Rowe, a family physician and a thought leader in the emergent area of health, inner happiness and wellbeing wisdom. The keynotes will be presenting on the topics of precision cancer medicine; hearing and cochlear implants; cardiology and technology; and happiness and wellbeing in the healthcare field, respectively.

The conference also offers numerous workshops, including Suturing Skills, GP Practical Skills, Ultrasound and Critical Care, Conducting Clinical Research, Patient-Physician Communication, Physiotherapy in High-Calibre Athletics and a tour of RCSI's new state-of-the-art healthcare education and training facilities at 26 York Street.

Dr Sarah O'Neill, Chair of the Scientific Committee said: "Now in its seventh year, ICHAMS' continued success is a real testament to the dedication and hard work of our student organising committee. We are very excited about this year's programme and we anticipate it will encourage innovative thinking as attendees share their research knowledge and experiences with each other. We also look forward to welcoming our international delegates to Dublin and hope this experience gives students an insight into the world of scientific research."

In addition to the academic components of the conference, ICHAMS offers a full social programme including a trivia night and cultural performance, a walking tour of Dublin and a black tie dinner.
