Transition year students get hands-on with the world of medicine and healthcare at RCSI MiniHealthSciences 2025

RCSI welcomed 250 transition year students from across Ireland to take part in the annual RCSI MiniHealthSciences programme.
The event provided post-primary students with a unique opportunity to experience the medical profession first hand through engaging lectures, interactive workshops, and live-streamed surgeries, all led by experts in the field. More than 3,100 students took part in online programmes as part of the event.
Now in its 18th year, RCSI MiniHealthSciences continues to grow in popularity, attracting students eager to explore potential careers in healthcare. This year’s programme featured a diverse range of sessions, including insights into a patient’s journey, an introduction to forensic pathology, discussions on sports medicine, and an overview of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Students also learned about the latest innovations in medical technology. In addition to medical sessions, students received valuable guidance on mental and physical health.
This year’s programme included dentistry for the first time, giving the transition year students a glimpse into what the first cohort of students on RCSI’s new Bachelor of Dental Surgery will experience when they begin their RCSI studies this September.
Dr Sinead Toomey, Academic Lead for the RCSI MiniHealthSciences programme, said: "We were delighted to welcome so many students to RCSI again this year. The programme offers a rare chance to interact with healthcare professionals, explore cutting-edge developments in patient care, and gain a deeper understanding of the professions. We hope this experience has inspired many of the participants to pursue careers in the health sciences."
The RCSI MiniPharm and MiniPhysio online programmes also ran during the week, giving students the chance to explore careers in pharmacy, physiotherapy, and the pharmaceutical industry.
