Professor Gianpiero Cavalleri, Professor of Human Genetics at the RCSI School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences and Deputy Director of FutureNeuro Research Ireland Centre for Translational Brain Science, has been appointed to Ireland’s newly established National Science Advice Forum.

The appointment was announced by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD.

The forum comprises 12 members with internationally recognised expertise across a range of scientific disciplines and has been established to strengthen the integration of scientific evidence into public policy and Government decision-making.

The National Science Advice Forum will proactively identify opportunities to incorporate science advice into policy considerations, provide advice in response to needs identified by Ministers and Government Departments, facilitate engagement between Government and scientific experts, contribute to capability development and scientific understanding across the civil service, and develop and report on an annual work programme.

Professor Cavalleri is an internationally recognised researcher in human genetics and neurological disease. His appointment reflects his leadership in advancing research that informs policy and public health.

Commenting on the appointment, he said: "It is an incredible honour to be appointed to the National Science Advice Forum. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Forum and across the civil service, to advise on scientific issues, and to enhance the role of robust scientific evidence in shaping policy in Ireland. I am particularly keen to inform initiatives relating to health research and human genomics, shaped in partnership with patients and the public.”
