Eight hundred students have marked the beginning of their studies in healthcare by taking part in the annual White Coat Ceremony at RCSI. As a longstanding tradition, the White Coat Ceremony has welcomed new students to the University for more than 30 years.

This year, students from Medicine, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Physician Associate Studies, Advanced Therapeutic Technologies and Dentistry took part in the ceremonies.

Although originally organised to formally welcome students into the Anatomy Room, the event has since evolved into a symbolic milestone that marks the beginning of students’ academic journeys, underscoring the importance of professionalism across all health science disciplines.

Professor Tracy Robson, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, said: “It is a privilege to welcome our newest students to RCSI and to share this important milestone with them as they begin their studies. The White Coat Ceremony represents much more than the beginning of an academic journey. From their first days at RCSI, our students are encouraged to consider the responsibilities that come with a career in healthcare and science, and the importance of bringing integrity, compassion and respect to everything they do.

“I wish all of our new students every success and look forward to seeing them develop throughout their time at RCSI.”

The students were addressed by Professor Judith Strawbridge, Director of Education at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences; Professor Denis Harkin, Head of the Centre for Professionalism in Medicine and Health Sciences; Professor Garry Duffy, Head of Department of Anatomy and Regenerative Medicine; and Professor Celine Marmion, Professor, Department of Chemistry, all of whom wished the students the best of luck as they begin their studies.

Professionalism at RCSI

Addressing the students, Professor Harkin reflected on the significance of the white coat and the responsibilities associated with careers in healthcare and science: “Historically, the white coat symbolises professionalism, caring, and a purity of purpose. It is regarded as an emblem of the precious trust, which is placed in us by both patients and the public, a trust we must earn and protect.

“You are the health professionals and scientists of the future, and the trainee health professionals and scientists of now. Many of you will encounter personal and professional challenges as you learn about the variety of human conditions. Whilst those individual challenges may differ – as a community you will all share that commonality of experiences – and the need for some extra support and kindness when times get tough.”

Student Union President Le-An Telesford also spoke at the ceremonies, followed by student speakers who reflected on their own White Coat Ceremonies and offered advice to new students as they begin their academic training.

Professor Tracy Robson then led the students in declaring their commitment to professionalism, mirroring the declaration they will recite as graduands on conferring day. The declaration acknowledges the responsibilities they must begin to undertake as future healthcare professionals and scientists from the beginning of their academic studies.
