Summary

Core Competencies in Neurosurgery – Cranial is a face-to-face teaching session which includes didactic lectures followed by hands-on teaching using high-fidelity simulation techniques.

The hands-on sessions will include simulation of retractor systems, patient positioning and tumour excision. The hands on sessions are complemented by the presence of senior neurosurgical faculty.

Suitable for: SHOs.

  • Introduction to cranial neurosurgery, including basic neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.
  • Fundamentals of neuronavigation.
  • Interpretation of neuroimaging.
  • Cranial positioning and operative setup.
  • Surgical approaches to the cranial vault and skull base.
  • Microsurgical techniques, including dural patch repair.
  • Practical use of neuronavigation, the operating microscope and endoscopy.
