Essential Medical Professionalism

Summary 

 

Please note: This course consists of two components: online pre-course learning and a classroom training day. All online pre-course learning must be completed before attending the classroom training day. Failure to do so may result in refusal of entry. The classroom training will take place in RCSI Dublin.

This one-day high-fidelity simulation programme provides intensive, immersive training in medical professionalism for surgeons and emergency physicians.

Through realistic clinical scenarios, facilitated reflective debriefs, and structured workshops, participants apply national standards and legal obligations to the most challenging aspects of modern clinical practice; consent, open disclosure, confidentiality, team communication, digital professionalism and patient-centred care.

Suitable for: All surgical and emergency medicine NCHDs.

Learning outcomes

  • Apply core principles of medical professionalism when navigating high-pressure or ethically complex clinical situations.
  • Demonstrate effective non-technical skills as they relate to professionalism and patient safety.
  • Practise open disclosure and transparent communication in accordance with Irish law, IMC guidance, and HSE Open Disclosure policy.
  • Apply ethical decision-making to challenges involving consent, capacity, fairness, resource allocation and clinical prioritisation.
  • Demonstrate appropriate and lawful management of confidential information, including lawful disclosure within and outside the healthcare team.
  • Recognise, evaluate and respond appropriately to risks related to digital professionalism and professional online conduct.
  • Reflect critically on personal behaviours, biases, and professional responsibilities and integrate insights from simulation into actionable behaviours for safer and accountable clinical practice.
