Entry requirements
NCHDs who have previously completed the Basic Surgical Principles and Practice (BSSP) certificate are automatically eligible for this programme and will be given preference upon application.
SHOs and junior registrars who have not had the opportunity to complete the BSSP can apply for the remaining places on the programme; shortlisting is assessed on the follow:
Essential
You must:
- Be either an experienced SHO (two years minimum) or junior registrar – evidence of clinical experience should be included on a detailed CV.
- Registered on the Continuous Professional Development Support Scheme (CPD-SS).
- Work within the public health service (however, doctors working in the private heath service will also be considered).
- Have completed the MRCS Part A – this may be waived in light of significant experience or research
Nice to have
- A letter or email of support from your consultant.
- Active participation in the CPD-SS programme for the past 1-2 years.
Fees
The total course fee is €2,240 (free for NCHDs)
- €990 is covered via the NCHD CPD funding, which RCSI can claim back from the HSE on behalf of NCHDs (if eligible and enrolled in CPD).
- NCHDs can claim back the €1,250 directly from their hospitals through the training support scheme (TSS), as the certificate is approved by HSE National Doctors Training and Planning (NDTP). Alternatively, you can pay the balance (€1,250) via three instalments.
