Summary
Suitable for: SHOs and registrars; doctors working in emergency medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics and trauma
There has been a significant shift in major trauma clinical presentations in Ireland from high-speed younger patients to older patients with often multiple co-morbidities with a higher prevalence of head trauma. The Department of Health report of the national trauma steering group, 'A Trauma System for Ireland', has recommended significant changes to standardise how major trauma care is delivered in Ireland, including the imminent establishment of major trauma units, centres and networks.
This one-day practical course allows you to enhance your skills in the initial management of the severely injured trauma patient. If you have previously completed an Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (ATLS) or equivalent, you will be provided an opportunity to revise the principles of the early management of major trauma cases.
This course is primarily aimed at doctors who are working in emergency medicine or work as part of a major trauma team, or who are expected to manage acute presentations with major trauma.
The course includes an update on American College of Surgeons Trauma Committee guidelines for major trauma management.
Skills stations includes:
- Basic airway management in trauma
- Surgical airway
- Chest drain insertion
- Difficult vascular access
Interactive workshops cover:
- Massive transfusion protocols
- Management of burns-simulation
