As a health sciences institution, we want to do our part in containing the spread of COVID-19 and ensuring the health, safety and well-being of our communities and all those working in healthcare. We at RCSI are committed to continuing public healthcare education and we are confident that the virtual RCSI MyHealth Series will prove highly informative.

Managing Coronaphobia: Stay Present

As a psychotherapist, Dr Pádraic Dunne has noticed many clients presenting with 'coronaphobia 'and a growing sense of dread over an uncertain future. In the absence of a significant trauma, uncertainty is the seed of anxiety in most humans. Those of us experiencing anxiety find ourselves becoming more forgetful. It’s harder to say focused on a conversation, a book or a favourite TV show. We lose our keys, leave doors open, and pots on cookers. We can find ourselves driving, with no memory of the past 5km.

This is to be expected when the brain is projecting into an uncertain future – the brain can only manage so much. What is the solution? Practice staying in the present moment. After all, this is the only place that you actually exist; the past is gone and the future hasn’t happened.

During this discussion, the panel will discuss techniques to help strengthen our capacity to remain present, as an antidote to an uncertain future.

Register your interest for this event – a link to the lecture will be shared in advance.

This panel discussion will be chaired by Dr Mary Collins, Chartered Psychologist and Senior Executive Development Specialist at the RCSI Institute of Leadership.

Panelists include:

  • Dr Pádraic Dunne, Immunologist, practicing psychotherapist and meditation teacher at the RCSI Centre for Positive Psychology and Health
  • Prof. Ciaran O’Boyle, Director of the RCSI Centre for Positive Psychology and Health
  • Dr Trudy Meehan, Lecturer at the RCSI Centre for Positive Psychology and Health
