Course details

Suitable for: SHOs and registrars in emergency medicine and all other specialities.

RCSI is providing the American Heart Association’s ACLS provider course as part of the CPD-SS in collaboration with the Irish Heart Foundation.

ACLS courses are appropriate for candidates who direct or participate in cardiac arrests or in managing potential cardiovascular emergencies. The course incorporates simulated scenarios involving deteriorating patients to build on high-quality Basic Life Support (BLS) skills provision, and incorporates technical and non-technical skills acquisition to allow safe and effective participation as part of a cardiac arrest team.

This is a two-day classroom and simulation-based course and is suitable for all levels of physician on the CPD-SS. Those participating must be proficient in basic life support skills, in ECG interpretation and in basic emergency pharmacology. Candidates will be provided with an ACLS provider manual and on-line access key to American Heart Association learning platform materials for mandatory pre-course material to be completed.

Successful candidates will receive certification for two years as ACLS Provider accredited through the Irish Heart Foundation.

This course is run over two days:

  • Part A: Monday, 6 February 2023
  • Part B: Tuesday, 7 February 2023

Candidates must:

  • Complete online pre-course material prior to course attendance.
  • Have an in-date BLS for Healthcare Provider Certificate.
  • Be physically able to participate in simulated cardiac arrest scenarios including delivery of chest compressions.
  • Be present for the full course duration and participate in all lessons.
  • Successfully pass an end of course MCQ.
  • Successfully pass skills assessments in high-quality BLS skills provision, basic airway management, and Megacode skills (cardiac arrest simulated scenario).
