Essential Skills in Surgery

Summary

Please note: This course consists of two components: online pre-course learning and a classroom training day. All online pre-course learning must be completed before attending the classroom training day. Failure to do so may result in refusal of entry. The classroom training will take place in RCSI Dublin.

This course is designed for SHOs in surgery and emergency medicine who are commencing their training pathway.

This course will provide attendees with the basic surgical skills which form the basis of most surgical procedures. There will also be an opportunity to further develop these skills and perform some simulated minor procedures.

Suitable for: Emergency medicine and surgical SHOs.

Learning outcomes

  • Proficiency in basic surgical skills of familiarity of instruments and sutures, knot-tying and suturing.
  • Knowledge of operating room etiquette, scrubbing and gowning, documentation of consent and operating notes.
  • Surgical concepts and techniques used in performing common minor procedures.
