Q&A with Dr Brian Chee, Winner of the inaugural RCSI Prof Prem Medal

1. How did you feel when you found out you won the first inaugural Prof Prem Medal?

I was incredibly shocked but absolutely thrilled to receive the news. To be entirely honest, topping the exam wasn't even on my radar - like most candidates, I was just relieved and happy to have passed! I feel truly honoured and blessed to receive this award. I could not have achieved this alone, and would like to extend my deepest gratitude to my mentors, study partners, and wife for their unwavering support throughout my career and intensive exam preparations.

2. How did you prepare for the MRCS examination to allow you to get such a high mark?

I credit having a reliable study partner as one of the single most important factors in my success. The MRCS Part B is a grueling exam, and navigating the preparation alongside a colleague kept me highly motivated. We were able to run realistic mock OSCEs and provide each other with critical, constructive feedback to improve. In terms of study materials, I utilised both textbooks recommended in the official RCSI guide, as well as various online resources shared by other candidates.

3. What suggestions would you give to candidates preparing for the MRCS exam?

My main advice is to start your preparation early, ideally a few months in advance, but keep your initial daily schedule sustainable to avoid burnout before ramping up the intensity as the exam approaches. Secondly, if possible, do not study in isolation. Find a colleague, friend, or a trusted mentor who can test you and give feedback. As the part B is an OSCE, practicing out loud with others to simulate realistic exam conditions is key to building confidence for the actual day.
