Your journey
The one-year International Medical Commencement Programme (IMCP) is delivered across two academic semesters. You will complete core science modules, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Human Physiology, with module combinations tailored to your chosen health sciences pathway.
You can also select from a range of elective modules, including Health and Well-being, Intercultural Communication and Learning at University, helping you prepare for the academic and personal demands of third-level education. In Semester 2, all students take English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to develop the language skills required for academic study and professional communication.
Teaching is delivered through a blended approach that combines lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and small-group learning. Assessment is continuous throughout the year and includes a variety of formats such as multiple-choice questions (MCQs), very short answer questions (VSAQs), short answer questions (SAQs), presentations, essays and reflective assignments, as well as end-of-semester examinations. Semester 1 examinations take place in January, while Semester 2 examinations are held in May/June.
Your IELTS (International English Language Testing System) results – submitted before enrolment – determine whether you are assigned to IELTS Preparation modules or English for Medical Studies (EMS) modules. Progression to your chosen degree programme is dependent on meeting the specific IELTS language requirements for that course. IELTS examinations are held at the end of each semester of the programme.
