Entry requirements

Applicants will be selected for admission to the five or six-year entry point of the medicine programme on the basis of open competition using the following criteria:

  • Basic eligibility, i.e. achievement of minimum academic and English language entry requirements.
  • References and life experience, i.e. work / life balance, extracurricular activities, relevant work or voluntary experience, etc.
  • Performance at a structured interview.

During the application process candidates will be asked to indicate if they agree to participate in an online non-academic attributes assessment. If a candidate agrees they may be invited to participate in a pilot evaluation of this assessment tool. Whether a candidate agrees to participate or not will not impact a candidates application. A candidates result in the non-academic attributes assessment will not impact their application as the assessment is not formally part of the admissions process for the medical programme this current year.

The following requirements are the minimum standards for consideration for entry into the Undergraduate Medical Programme for the Academic Year 2024/2025. Attainment of these grades does not guarantee acceptance to the School of Medicine. Admission to the 5 or 6 Year Programme is at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

Applicants who have a minimum of 12 years of school education and complete one of the following Foundation Programmes may be considered for the 5 Year or 6 Year Programmes.

Abbey College (Cambridge and Manchester) International Foundation Programme – Biomedicine and Science Pathway

5 year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 80%, to include 75% in Chemistry and no other individual module score less than 70%.

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 70%, to include 70% in Chemistry and no other individual module score less than 60%.

Bath Academy International Medical Foundation Programme

5 year Programme

Applicants must complete three major modules, with a minimum grade of A in Chemistry, minimum grade of B in Biology and a minimum grade of B in the optional major module.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must complete three major modules with a minimum grade of B in each module.

David Game College: University Foundation Programme (UFP) – Medicine Pathway

5 Year Programme

Applicants must complete three major modules, with a minimum grade of A in Chemistry, minimum grade of B in Biology and a minimum grade of B in the optional major module.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must complete three major modules with a minimum grade of B in each module.

DLD College London International Foundation Programme – Medicine Pathway

5 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 80%, to include 75% in Chemistry and no other individual module score less than 70%.

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 70%, to include 70% in Chemistry and no other individual module score less than 60%.

International Foundation Group (IFG) Medical Foundation Programme

5 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 80%, to include minimum scores of 80% in the Chemistry-based modules and no other individual module score less than 75%.

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 70%, with no individual module score less than 65%.

INTO UEA International Foundation in Pharmacy, Health and Life Sciences

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 70% across all modules, with no individual module score less than 65%.

King’s College London International Foundation

5 Year Programme

Minimum score of 75%, with no less than 70% in each individual module

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall score of 70%, with no less than 65% in each individual module.

King’s Education Medical Foundation Programme

5 Year Programme

Minimum overall score of 75%, to include 70% in Chemistry and no other individual module score less than 65%.

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall score of 65%, with no individual module score less than 60%.

NCUK International Foundation Year*

Minimum grades AAAB in English for Academic Purposes, Maths for Science, Biology and Chemistry

UCLAN On Campus Medicine University Foundation Programme

5 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 70% across three modules, with no individual module score less than 65%.

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 65% across the three modules, with no individual module score less than 60%.

UCLAN On Campus Life Sciences University Programme

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 70% across the three modules, with no individual module score less than 65%.

University of St Andrew’s International Foundation Programme for Medicine

5 Year Programme

Overall average score of 14 across all modules with no individual module score lower than 13 including Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and Organic and Biological Chemistry 1.

Other foundation programmes not listed above may be considered for entry into the 6 year programme. Enquiries should be emailed to the Admissions Office.

Applicants whose first language is not English or who have not been educated solely in a native English speaking country must satisfy an English language proficiency requirement through the following means:

5 Year Programme

IELTS Academic - A minimum score of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

6 Year Programme

IELTS Academic - A minimum score of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

Applicants who have been solely educated through an English language curriculum in a native English speaking country and / or those who have completed the following curricula meet the English Language Requirement for entry into the 5 or 6 Year Programmes.

IB Diploma Minimum score of 5 in Standard or Higher Level English.
(I)GCSE/GCE Minimum score of Grade C or 4 in English.
Irish Leaving Certificate Minimum score of Grade O6 in English.
Hong Kong DSE Minimum of Level 5 in English.

5 Year Programme

Applicants who have completed a full Bachelor's Degree in a science or health professions field with a competitive GPA will be considered for admission. Candidates who present a Bachelor’s Degree in another discipline with post bachelor courses in science and test scores for MCAT or GAMSAT will be considered on a case by case basis.

Please note:

The completed Bachelor’s Degree should be from a university programme which has entry requirements that are equivalent to an A level or International Baccalaureate qualification according to UK ENIC equivalency guidelines.

All applicants presenting a Bachelor’s Degree must also have completed at least 12 years of schooling by the end of secondary school education.
