Qatar University

Qatar University (QU) – the national institution of higher education in Qatar – is located in Doha and was established in 1973.

In 2021, RCSI and QU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the aim to develop collaborative academic and scientific initiatives, and strengthen bilateral co-operation between both institutions.

Since 2023, RCSI and QU have enrolled two PhD scholars per annum on this dual StAR PhD programme. The programme focuses on interdisciplinary research in health sciences specifically ‘biomedical and pharmaceutical’ and ‘clinical and population health’ research and will award 10 scholarships covering five intakes of two scholars of any nationality from 2023 to 2027.

Each scholar carries out their four-year structured PhD under the supervision of one RCSI supervisor and one QU supervisor, and spend two years working on their PhD in each location.

For this programme, scholars spend the first two years of their study at QU, taking the required courses and then completing their third and fourth years at RCSI. Scholars receive financial support from QU through a graduate assistantship for their first two years, which covers their salary and benefits. For the following two years, RCSI provides financial support, including scholar stipend, benefits, and project costs.
