Academic Travel Award
Many nurses and midwives carry out clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives or research studies as part of their clinical work or continuous personal and professional development. The data gained from such activities can play an important role in further developing the professions or initiating or improving services for patients/clients.
National and international knowledge sharing events such as conferences offer an important opportunity to both share knowledge with, and gain knowledge from others. However, the costs associated with travel, accommodation, and event admission fees can prove a deterrent to many, thus limiting potential opportunities for knowledge sharing and reducing impact on practice.
The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery is committed to supporting the nursing and midwifery professions in the delivery of efficient, effective, quality, person-centred care.
Aligned to the objectives of our strategic plan, we are launching the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Academic Travel Award. The award is intended to fund travel to, accommodation at, and/or admission to relevant knowledge sharing events for the purpose of disseminating evidence and best practices related to nursing and midwifery. The award is exclusively open to Fellows and Members of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.
Each year, the Faculty will, depending on available finances, allocate up to €20,000 to provide for the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Academic Travel Award. The maximum award per individual applicant will be limited to €4,000, and the total number of awards in any given year will be limited to the total funding available.
Purpose and objectives
The purpose of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Academic Travel Award is to:
- Support the national and international dissemination of innovative nursing and midwifery evidence which impacts on practice and leads to health systems improvement.
- Enhance, encourage and empower nursing and midwifery capacity and capability through lifelong learning and continuous personal and professional development.
The objective of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Academic Travel Award is to:
- Strengthen and optimise the contribution of nurses and midwives to healthcare.
- Support and enable nurses and midwives to maximise the full potential of their education, training and licence.
- Further develop the Fellowship and Membership community by providing opportunities for meaningful engagement both nationally and internationally.
The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Academic Travel Award is intended to support nurses and midwives through the provision of funding for travel, and/or accommodation and/or admission to knowledge sharing events only.
The Award does not provide for any other activities or expenses in relation to attending such events, included but not limited to travel insurance, visa applications, transfers to and from transportation hubs (such as airports), car parking or subsistence. It is the responsibility of the successful applicant to attend to such activities and cover such costs themselves.
The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Academic Travel Award is open exclusively to Fellows and Members of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery. Applicants must be in Good Standing for at least two consecutive years immediately prior to application. In the case where multiple people have worked on a particular initiative or project, only one application per paper/initiative/project will be accepted. Typically, this will be the accepted corresponding author.
In order to ensure as many people as possible can benefit from the award, applicants can choose to seek funding for travel and/or accommodation and/or event admission fees. We encourage applicants to only seek funding for what is required so that funds will be available to other Fellows and Members.
