Facilities

RCSI CRC Beaumont

The RCSI Clinical Research Centre (RCSI CRC) occupies the ground floor of RCSI’s Education and Research Centre (ERC) on the Beaumont Hospital campus that links directly to the main hospital at ground and first floor levels.

On site we have the following facilities:

  • Consultation rooms: We have two multipurpose consultation rooms designed to meet the needs of research participants and investigators. These rooms provide a private space for patient consultation and interviews, and are particularly suited for conducting the informed consent process with research participants and their family members or advocates. The consultation rooms contain examination couches and equipment for physical examination, and can be adapted to a range of clinical studies.
  • Day ward: The four-bed day ward provides accommodation for longer or complex patient visits. Each bed space is equipped with a high-low bed, patient chair, locker and table, piped oxygen and suction, and emergency call buttons. Facilities in the day ward include equipment for vital signs monitoring, height and weight measurements, ECG and phlebotomy. A resuscitation trolley is always fully stocked and available for use, and RCSI CRC is linked to the Beaumont Hospital emergency response service.
  • Sample processing and storage: RCSI CRC has a designated resource for onsite sample processing. It includes facilities for the short-term storage of biological samples for studies taking place in the centre. Facilities include centrifuge (refrigerated or ambient), -20°C storage and ultra-low/-80°C storage. Freezers are linked to a cloud-based server for continuous temperature monitoring. Research teams also have access to translational research laboratories and biobanking services within the ERC.
  • Biobanking: RCSI has a number of active biobanks – you can learn more about them here
  • Clean utility area: The centre has a dedicated space for investigational medicinal product (IMP) preparation and reconstitution. It includes access to phone and IT systems and also contains pharmacy fridges and storage facilities for essential supplies. Additional equipment includes IV infusion pumps and drip stands.
  • Pharmacy space and IMP storage: We have a dedicated, secure, temperature-monitored storage area for investigational medicinal products on site. Temperatures are monitored using a cloud-based system that provides continuous recordings and triggers warning and critical alerts if temperatures exceed set ranges.
  • Study equipment storage areas: RCSI CRC has dedicated areas for the storage of clinical supplies used for the conduct of clinical research studies, e.g. lab kits, dressings, IV giving sets.
  • Study management, IT systems and data management: The centre uses the CRF Manager system to set up studies and track progress and resource usage. All study IT database systems can be facilitated along with access to the hospital IT system on site. Biostatistics support is also available via the RCSI Data Sciences Centre.
