Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

The Department of Chemistry operates a Bruker Avance Neo X 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system as a core research facility within RCSI.

The system offers two probe options: a BBFO iProbe and a dedicated diffusion probe. It supports molecular identification, structural assignment, purity assessment, mixture analysis, and the investigation of molecular interactions and behaviour in solution.

The dedicated diffusion probe supports DOSY and related measurements for mixture separation, determining molecular diffusion and hydrodynamic behaviour, and investigating polymers, aggregates, supramolecular systems, micelles and nanoparticles in solution.

The instrument forms part of the NMR Centre of Expertise, developed through a partnership between RCSI and Trinity College Dublin. Supported by funding from Research Ireland, the centre provides researchers with access to advanced NMR instrumentation, specialist expertise and a collaborative environment for addressing research questions in chemistry, polymer science, pharmaceutical science and related disciplines.
