University of Pittsburgh
In June 2025, the National University of Ireland approved RCSI’s application for a joint PhD in precision and regenerative medicine between RCSI and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the Swanson School of Engineering in Pennsylvania, USA.
This programme will enrol 10 scholars per annum for five intakes with the first cohort of scholars having begun in September 2025.
The programme focuses on collaborative interdisciplinary research in precision and regenerative medicine. Each scholar carries out their five-year structured PhD under the supervision of one RCSI supervisor and one University of Pittsburgh supervisor, and spends two years working on their PhD in each location.
For this programme, scholars spend the first year of their study at Pittsburgh, taking required courses and doing laboratory rotations.
After selecting their PhD project topic, they then spend years 2 and 3 in Dublin or Pittsburgh, and complete years 4 and 5 of the programme at the other location.
Scholars receive financial support for the entire programme which covers fees, scholar stipend, benefits, and project costs when in RCSI, and their salary, benefits and project costs whilst in Pittsburgh.
