General and Emergency Surgery

Overview

In 2020, RCSI will initiate an innovation to the General Surgery Training Programme which introduces a specific emphasis on General and Emergency Surgery.

This new programme aims to meet the needs of patients and our hospital services. By increasing the number of consultant general surgeons in our hospital groups, we will be better equipped to match the presenting case mix to our workforce and allow for reasonable on-call rotas to be put in place to address both patient safety and work/life balance of surgical teams.

Trainees will work across both model 4 and model 3 hospitals in a region to ensure a breadth of experience and opportunity to fulfil the curriculum requirements. This will include rotations which provide experience in areas such as – but not limited to – plastic and reconstructive surgery, and paediatric surgery.
