Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Drawing on a history spanning over 200 years, today's Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at RCSI is at the cutting-edge of professional service for our patients, students, and professional colleagues. Uniquely, in the setting of academic practice in Ireland, the Department provides services at all three tertiary Dublin maternity hospitals: the Rotunda Hospital Dublin, the Coombe Hospital and the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street.

The Department also has a presence at several major regional medical centres throughout Ireland, including Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital DroghedaUniversity Hospital WaterfordMidland Regional Hospital Mullingar, and St Luke's General Hospital KilkennyCavan General Hospital.

In addition to its academic leadership role, the RCSI Fetal Centre based at the Rotunda is dedicated to ensuring that patients have immediate access to the latest in obstetric medical services; this includes our state-of-the-art prenatal diagnostic service, where patients can avail of the latest cutting-edge obstetric ultrasound and screening tests, as early as the first trimester of pregnancy.

RCSI medical students have the opportunity to witness both the joys of normal obstetrics and the challenges of complicated maternal, fetal, and gynaecologic pathology during an intensive six-week rotation at one of the three Dublin maternity hospitals or one of our regional obstetric centres.

As part of this rotation, you will experience the full breadth of obstetrics and gynaecology through dedicated time in the delivery suite, community obstetrics and gynaecological clinics, various subspecialty fields, and participating in basic and advanced obstetric and gynaecologic surgeries. Students are embedded as members of healthcare management teams and encouraged to contribute to the day-to-day care of patients under direct physician supervision. You will be exposed to national leaders and innovators in the area of obstetrics and gynaecology, providing opportunities for additional research in this area and exploration of this specialty as a future career choice.

The RCSI Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology conducts world-class, ground-breaking research in the perinatal space. Core research topics include intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR), gestational diabetes, congenital heart disease, discordant growth in twins, prenatal diagnosis of aneuploidy, twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), recurrent miscarriage, emergency gyanecology care and endometriosis.

Dedicated research teams provide essential day-to-day research and clinical trial support to RCSI obstetrics and gynaecology principal investigators, as well as PhD and MD candidates. The research teams continue to expand and develop a portfolio of randomised clinical trials (RCTs), observational and pilot studies, as well as extensive audits in this specialty field. For more information on current clinical research programmes, please see the RCSI Clinical Research Centre.
