I had the opportunity to complete a four-week clinical elective in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Kasturba Medical College Hospital in Manipal, India.

Throughout the elective, I was exposed to a wide range of gastrointestinal and hepatological conditions and had the opportunity to observe numerous diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including endoscopies, colonoscopies and ERCPs. Following patients through their investigations and management gave me valuable insight into the clinical practice of gastroenterology and hepatology in a different healthcare setting.

What stood out to me most, however, was seeing the impact of healthcare accessibility on patients. Many patients travelled long distances from rural areas to reach the hospital and access specialist care. Witnessing this made me appreciate how factors beyond a patient’s medical condition can influence their healthcare journey.

The elective was therefore much more than a clinical learning experience. It allowed me to develop my knowledge and clinical skills while gaining a broader perspective on healthcare accessibility and the importance of compassionate, patient-centred care.
